I’ve loved photography since I worked on our high school yearbook years ago, but a particular memory from the summer after grade twelve has defined that love for me. It was a hot summer day and I’d stopped by the school for a few hours to finish some pictures in the darkroom for one of the final layouts. It was a frustrating morning – nothing was working. My images weren’t developing properly and I was ready to call it a day. I finally decided to start fresh with new chemicals and give it one last try. I grabbed a fresh sheet of paper, confirmed my negative was still focused in the enlarger, exposed it, and then placed the paper into the developing bath. By the time I moved my paper to the stop bath and fixer, I could see my image had come to life – it worked, and I had created a tangible picture!
It’s been over 15 years now since I’ve stepped foot in a darkroom, but I still experience that same feeling of magic when I create portraits with my clients. From planning your session to the moments where your own family dynamics are authentically captured (even while kids are being kids!) – and then hand editing every image until it’s a beautifully finished portrait, I still get excited by the whole process and the art of making a picture. I love tangible and personal art. Albums that we page through year after year, the canvas and print gallery walls in my own home filled with portraits of our family – these are some of my most treasured possessions. As a mom to 3 young kids, I’ve realized how quickly the years are already flying by and how easy it is to forget how little they once were.
I’ve studied photography extensively since those early years and continue to learn and grow in my work. I’ve taken many classes on posing people to look their best, new editing techniques and naturally and authentically capturing emotion. I love sitting down with clients to ask them how they want their images to make them look and feel, and then seeing their joy when they see their images. I would love to connect and make a plan to photograph your baby bump, new baby, or your family – why not contact me today to make a plan for your session?
